About this unit

The Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ1000 (announced in June 2014) is a high-end bridge camera: a single body that combines a large sensor, long zoom and 4K video without having to change lenses. Its main strength is the 20.1 MP 1-inch BSI-CMOS sensor, considerably larger than that of a typical compact or bridge camera with a 1/2.3" sensor, alongside a Leica DC Vario-Elmarit 25-400 mm equivalent f/2.8-4.0 with 16x optical zoom. That combination makes it a very versatile camera: travel, events, portraits with reasonable background blur and, above all, wildlife and birds thanks to the 400 mm reach.

It was one of the first bridge cameras to offer 4K UHD at 30p and 100 Mbps (with a sensor crop when recording in 4K), with a 12 fps burst, a 2.36-million-dot OLED viewfinder and a 3" articulating screen. The contrast-detection autofocus with Depth from Defocus is fast and reliable in almost any light. It is fair to acknowledge that it is not pocket-sized (831 g with battery) and that the screen on this original version is not touch-sensitive. It is designed for those who want a single camera that does almost everything, with good image quality and real manual control, without carrying several lenses.

· Frequently asked questions ·
Can I change the lens?

No. The FZ1000 is a bridge camera with fixed optics: the Leica 25-400 mm zoom is built into the body and does not accept interchangeable lenses. That is precisely why you should carefully check the condition of the optics before buying, since a problem with the lens affects the whole camera.

How do I know if it is the original version or the FZ1000 II?

It is key to look at the exact number. The DMC-FZ1000 (original, 2014) does not have a touchscreen and offers around 360 shots per charge. The DC-FZ1000 II (2019) is touch-sensitive, has a better menu and more battery life. Note the prefix: DMC- is the original and DC- is the II.

What battery does it use and how much battery life does it have?

It uses the DMW-BLC12 battery, shared with models such as the G7, G85, GX8, FZ200, FZ300 and FZ2500, so original and generic replacements are easy to find. CIPA battery life is around 360 shots with the screen (about 300 with the viewfinder), a modest figure: for a long day you should carry a second battery.

How does it record video?

Very well for its time: 4K UHD at 30/25p and 100 Mbps, plus 1080p and slow motion at 120 fps (100 fps in PAL). Two honest warnings: when recording in 4K a sensor crop is applied and optical stabilization is disabled, and it has no built-in ND filter, so in strong light you will need an external 62 mm screw-on ND. It is also worth checking the exposure settings in video, because automatic control is more limited than in photo mode.

Is it good for beginners?

Yes, it is an excellent camera to start with without complications: a single body covers everything from wide angle to 400 mm, it has automatic modes and also full manual control for learning as you go. Its 25-400 mm range saves you from having to buy and change lenses, which is ideal for anyone who wants immediate versatility.

Is it reliable to buy second-hand?

It is a robust and very popular camera, with abundant battery replacements. As it has fixed optics, the important thing is the condition of the lens: ask for test photos at f/2.8 and at 400 mm, check that the zoom extends and retracts smoothly without noises or play and that there is no fungus or visible internal dust. If it was used a lot for video, verify that 4K records without interruptions due to temperature.

What should I check when I receive it?

Confirm that it includes the original battery and charger and ask about the condition and cycles of the battery. Check the hinge of the articulating screen (no play), that there are no dead pixels on the screen or in the OLED viewfinder, and that the optics are clean. Remember that the 62 mm ND filter is not included and is very useful if you are going to record video.

To complete it, take a look at spare batteries, memory cards or cases.
