Can I change the lens or put a longer one on it?
No. The FZ1000 II has a fixed, non-interchangeable lens (Leica DC Vario-Elmarit 25-400 mm). There is no mount: any 'adapter' is only a front thread for filters or teleconverters, it doesn't change the lens. That's why, when buying it second-hand, it's key that the lens is impeccable.
Is it good for beginners?
Yes, it's one of the most recommended options for starting out without complications: since you don't change lenses, you cover everything from wide-angle to telephoto with a single body. It has automatic modes, an articulating touchscreen, and good ergonomics, but also RAW and manual controls to grow with.
How does it record video?
It records 4K UHD at 30p and Full HD up to 60p, with a 3.5 mm microphone input. That's more than enough for travel and family. Keep in mind two limits: 4K is recorded with a sensor crop and it doesn't include pro features (log, 10-bit) or a headphone output.
How long does the battery last?
It uses the battery DMW-BLC12. CIPA battery life is around 350 shots approximately, with similar figures using either the screen or viewfinder depending on the mode. It supports USB charging, very useful with a power bank while traveling. Old batteries degrade: if it's second-hand, ask about its age or budget for a spare.
How does it differ from the original FZ1000 and the FZ2000/2500?
The 'II' (2019) improves over the original FZ1000 (2014) with a slightly higher-magnification OLED viewfinder, touchscreen, and Bluetooth. Don't confuse it with the FZ2000/FZ2500, which has a 1" sensor but a longer 20x zoom and a more video-focused orientation. Confirm that the model is exactly DC-FZ1000 II / DC-FZ1000M2.
What should I check when buying it second-hand?
Since it has a fixed lens, the most important thing is the lens: run through the entire zoom range and check the front element for internal dust, fungus, or damaged mechanism (they would render the camera useless). Also check the hinge of the articulating screen, that the viewfinder's eye sensor switches properly, and the condition of the grip rubber, buttons, and tripod thread.
Is it water- and dust-resistant?
No. Despite being sold as a travel camera, it is not weather-sealed. It should be protected from rain, sand, and moisture. If you buy it used and the seller used it outdoors or at the beach, check for signs of moisture or sand ingress.
