Can I change the lens or put on a brighter one?
No. The FZ200 has a fixed lens: its Leica DC 25-600 mm f/2.8 lens is part of the body and cannot be replaced or accept mount lenses. The only thing it accepts is front-thread accessories (filters or teleconverters). Precisely its appeal is that integrated constant f/2.8 zoom.
What battery does it use and how long does it last?
It uses the battery rechargeable DMW-BLC12 (Li-ion 7.2 V, 1200 mAh). CIPA battery life is around 540 shots per charge, good for this type of camera, although intensive use of the viewfinder, zoom, and video reduces it. When buying second-hand, it's worth confirming that the battery is the correct one and holds a charge, and that it includes a charger.
Is it good for video?
Yes. It records Full HD 1920x1080 up to 60p (AVCHD and MP4) and 720p, plus high-speed modes for slow motion at 240 and 120 fps (at reduced resolution). For its time it was a solid option for video, with an external microphone input; on second-hand units it's worth checking the connector on the camera itself.
Is it good for beginners?
It's very versatile as a single camera: automatic modes, stabilization, and a huge reach make it comfortable to start with. At the same time it has full PASM controls and RAW to grow with. Keep in mind that the interface relies heavily on the rear dial and that switching between viewfinder and screen is manual (it has no eye sensor), a usage detail you have to get used to.
How does it perform in low light?
This is where its limit lies. The 1/2.3" 12.1 MP sensor performs very well in good light, but quality drops as ISO rises: it's comfortably usable up to ~ISO 400-800 and above ISO 1600 noise and loss of detail become evident. It also tends to blow out highlights, so shooting with some negative compensation helps. It's not a camera for demanding dark interiors.
What should I check when buying it second-hand?
Prioritize the mechanical and optical over the cosmetic. Test the entire zoom range (25→600 mm) looking for noises, jolts, or lens errors: since it's a fixed lens, a damaged lens makes the camera useless. Check that there's no dust, specks, or fungus inside the optical block, test the stabilizer at maximum telephoto, look for dead pixels on the sensor, viewfinder, and screen, and verify that the articulating screen hinge turns firmly and without play.
Is a 2012 unit reliable?
It's a well-built and proven model, but any example is already years old. The FZ200 doesn't easily expose the shutter count like a DSLR, so it's best to rely on the physical condition: a healthy battery, clean optics, and a smooth zoom are better indicators of reliability than the exterior appearance. Also check the ports (mic, HDMI, USB) and the front accessory thread.
