Can I change its lens or attach telephoto lenses?
No. The FZ300 has FIXED optics: the 25–600 mm F2.8 is built in and cannot be replaced. That is precisely its concept: a single kit that covers from wide-angle to super telephoto without changing anything. It accepts front-threaded accessories (filters or teleconverters) with an adapter, but the main lens cannot be changed.
What is the difference between the FZ300 and the FZ330? Is one better?
None: they are exactly the same camera. The FZ300 is the name for North America and the FZ330 for Europe and the UK. It is not a higher or lower model. It is worth not confusing it with the FZ200 (predecessor, without 4K or weather sealing) or with the FZ1000/FZ2000, which have a 1" sensor and offer considerably more quality at a higher price.
What battery does it use and how long does it last?
It uses the Panasonic DMW-BLC12 lithium-ion battery, shared with other Lumix cameras in the FZ family, which makes it easy to find replacements. CIPA battery life is about 380 shots per charge, standard for its class but below the FZ200. On a mixed day of photos, bursts, and video it can fall short, so we recommend having a spare battery on hand.
Is it good for recording video? Does it record 4K?
Yes. It records 4K UHD (3840×2160) at 30p/24p, in addition to Full HD, and includes 4K Photo mode to extract about 8 MP photos from 4K bursts. Keep in mind that some rolling shutter distortion may appear with fast movements and banding with some artificial lights: this is normal behavior for its type of sensor, not a defect.
Is it good for starting out in photography?
It is a very convenient option for enthusiasts who want versatility and reach without dealing with lenses. It covers almost any situation with a single kit and is robust. The trade-off is that its small 1/2.3" sensor limits quality in low light and cropping room; if your priority is maximum image quality, a larger sensor performs better, but for learning, traveling, and shooting everything it is a very capable companion.
What should I check when buying it second-hand?
Since it has fixed optics, check the condition of the zoom (that it has no play, sand, or slipping and that the motor runs smoothly) and that there are no fungi or internal dust on the lenses. Check that the rubber grips and port covers are intact, because the weather sealing depends on them. Test the screen articulation and touch, confirm that it includes a DMW-BLC12 battery and charger, and verify that the Wi-Fi works and that it records 4K without interruptions or overheating.
Is a low shutter count reliable on this camera?
The shutter count is difficult to read on Panasonic compacts, so it is not the best indicator. On this camera it is better to assess the physical condition of the lens (zoom, absence of fungi), the integrity of the seals, and the real health of the battery rather than a specific shutter number.
