What lenses are compatible with the Sony A7S?
It uses a Sony E mount and natively mounts FE (full-frame) lenses. You can see options in our collection of Sony E mount lenses. APS-C format E lenses work, but they crop the image (from ~12 MP to ~5 MP). Additionally, with adapters it accepts Canon EF, Leica M, cinema, or vintage manual optics, something very common with this camera.
Does the A7S record in 4K?
Not internally. The A7S outputs 4K UHD only via HDMI (8-bit 4:2:2) to an external recorder such as an Atomos Shogun/Ninja or Blackmagic. To card it records Full HD 1080p in XAVC S up to 50 Mbps, and in HD crop mode (1280x720) it allows 120 fps for slow motion. If you need 4K "to card," this isn't your camera: look at the A7S II.
Does it have in-body stabilization (IBIS)?
Is it good for beginners?
It is a specialized camera, not a generalist one. It shines in low light and in 1080p video, but its contrast-only autofocus is slow and "hunts" for focus, so it's no good for action or reliable continuous AF in video. The 12 MP leave little room for cropping. If you're starting out and want versatility for everything, there are more balanced options; if you're specifically drawn to night photography or video with a cinematic look, it has a lot to offer.
How are the battery and battery life?
It uses the battery NP-FW50, Sony's "small" one, with about 380 CIPA shots using the screen (somewhat fewer with the viewfinder, and considerably fewer when recording video). The scarce battery life is a common complaint, so it's worth budgeting for spare batteries and/or USB or dummy power. On the second-hand market, the original batteries are likely worn out.
Is it reliable bought second-hand and what should I check?
It's a robust magnesium body, but it's worth checking several points. Ask for the shutter count, which can be read from the EXIF with online tools; Sony doesn't publish an official shutter life for this model, although as an industry reference many cameras last on the order of 200,000 shots (it's a statistical average, not a guarantee). Since it's a camera heavily used for video, also ask about recording hours, which the photo counter doesn't reflect. Check for dust or spots on the sensor (interchangeable lens, outdoor use) and wear on the mount if heavy adapters have been used.
How do I tell the A7S apart from the A7S II or the regular A7?
Verify that the model is the original A7S (ILCE-7S) and not the A7S II (ILCE-7SM2, with IBIS and internal 4K) or the plain A7. The second-hand price differs a lot between them. Also confirm what the sale includes: some are offered "body only" without a charger or battery.
